instrument 001

To accurately record the salient features of a space one must detach themselves from the environment in which they are standing. When transforming our world from the three dimensional into a representation the recorder unwittingly interprets what he or she finds of most interest and records it as such.

It is the intention through this piece of equipment to detach the user from their surroundings in a way that will force them to record the space in its most literal and pragmatic.

Sitting between a camera lucida, and camera obscura and a sedan chair, this portable device acts as a means to render visible the otherwise unnoticed in a way that takes away the opportunity for subjective interpretation.

In practical terms the device performs an optical superimposition of the subject being viewed upon the surface upon which the recorder is drawing. The recorder sees both scene and drawing surface simultaneously, as in a photographic double exposure.

Welcome

We are an enthusiastic group of eight final year students at the Dundee School of Architecture, and would like to share our work with you via our blog.

Over the next few months, we will be engaging with the beautiful city of Perth, through intimate installations, experiments and exhibitions, where we aim to engage directly with the community. In return, this will greatly benefit our understanding of the city as well as our academic projects this year.

Please take your time to look through our blog, and feel free to share your opinions with us!

Contact us on materialdundee@gmail.com.

Thank you!
